OUR STORY

The South Waikato Super Sports Trust began with a simple goal, to help local athletes reach their dreams. More than 39 years ago, a group of local businesspeople came together to raise funds so that two South Waikato athletes could compete at the Olympics. What started as a small act of community support quickly grew into something much bigger.

With the backing of Councillor Bernie O’Sullivan and the South Waikato District Council, the first Super Sports event was born. Since then, it has evolved into an annual highlight, combining friendly competition, community pride, and a genuine commitment to helping local athletes go further.

For decades, the South Waikato District Council has remained a proud partner of the Trust. Together, they’ve helped hundreds of athletes fund travel, equipment, and competition costs as they represent both our region and our country on the world stage.

Today, the South Waikato Super Sports Trust continues to raise and distribute funds to sportspeople who are selected to represent New Zealand internationally, ensuring that talent and determination are never held back by financial barriers.

Everything about the Super Sports event is powered by locals. A dedicated volunteer committee of ten manages every detail, from planning the weekend and coordinating sponsorships to running fundraising events throughout the year. A separate board of trustees works alongside the committee to decide how funds are distributed, ensuring fairness, transparency, and a continued focus on supporting our community.

It’s South Waikato pride in action, locals helping locals through sport, spirit, and teamwork.
